IEM at Aalto
Industrial Engineering and Management combines technology and business: an engineer’s tools, commercial understanding and the ability to lead people. This page covers how to apply and what the first year looks like.
What IEM is
The IEM bachelor's is a programme at Aalto University's School of Science. In three years you study mathematics, programming, economics and operations management, and pick a minor from any Aalto school.
Graduates work as consultants, product managers, analysts and founders. About half continue to a master's in Otaniemi, the rest go on exchange or into work.
How to apply
Student life
The overalls are the IEM student's badge: a blue boilersuit and a five-colour stripe. Handed to first-years in the autumn.
A seated dinner party with songs and speeches. The fuksi sitsit are your first, not your last.
First-years collect fuksi points from events all year. They pay off on May Day eve on Ullanlinnanmäki.
The guild has a weekly sauna slot. Floorball, football and a ski trip in spring.

Do I have to join the guild?
No, but you should. Membership is 8 € per academic year and gives access to events, the guild room and member prices.
How much maths is there?
A lot in the first year: calculus, linear algebra and probability. From the second year the emphasis shifts to applying it.
Can I come if I can't code?
Yes. First-year courses start from the basics and assume no prior experience.
What are overall patches?
Badges you get from events, excursions and other guilds, sewn onto your overalls. The unwritten rule: the more, the better.
Can exchange students join?
Yes. Exchange students are welcome at every event, and the international committee runs its own programme in English.
